just about purrrrrfect

You ever notice how people who have cats sometimes say “purrfect”? I have. I’m thinking they think it’s cute or clever or genius or something. Which I’m not exactly sure it is, but whatever. Or maybe they just do it to upset dog people? Because dog people don’t have “rufferiffic” or “barktastic” or something cool like that, in which case maybe purrfect it is a little cute and clever and genius.
But I’ll fess up, I used purrfect today – in an ironic “don’t really like cats” kind of way, but still. And when I did it struck me that I wasn’t sure if it was 2 r’s or 3. Or maybe it was 4? More? I bet these cat freaks really run with it when they get the chance.
Wanna bet how many r’s you have to include in your purrfect before Google reports fewer than 100 hits? Here we go:

  1. purfect – 73,000
  2. purrfect – 638,000
  3. purrrfect – 760,000
  4. purrrrfect – 46,000
  5. purrrrrrfect – 19,000
  6. purrrrrrrfect – 1,000
  7. purrrrrrrrfect – 5,500
  8. purrrrrrrrrfect – 12,000
  9. purrrrrrrrrrfect – 800
  10. purrrrrrrrrrrfect – 1,500
  11. purrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 800
  12. purrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 600
  13. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 500
  14. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 300
  15. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 200
  16. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 45
  17. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 200
  18. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 100
  19. purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrfect – 60

Here’s a visual of from 9 on:

So yeah, you gotta go out 16 r’s before it really gets freakishly rare. Seems fair. I mean at 10 doesn’t really make the point, right? And once you’ve gone 13, you may as well take it to 15.
For the record, I lost $2 on the r-count over/under. I took under 7. Huge mistake. Won’t happen again.

the owls cd release @ the cedar

Yeah, pretty much what you’d expect from your local shy midtempo boygirl harmonizing 4 piece. Lots of awkward stage shuffling, lots of awkward eye contact, lots of songs about the sun or the moon or whatever, and lots and lots of vintage clothing. But for sure there were also some real moments of goodness, and maybe even a few that came close to great. But not a lot. Just sayin’. So nutshell: good, not great. Also: who knew the Owls had a 4000 song catalog. Seriously. They must have played 30 songs. All under 3 minutes, but still, more than I expected.
Non-musical highlight was the 14 pair of antlers decorating the stage (!!). Musical highlight was the ‘Even Now’, which is both a) off the old EP and b) one of the more uptempo numbers, but still, it was the highlight. The fact that it was the highlight is indicative of what happens when you play 30 midtempo boygirl harmonized sad songs in a row – they all kinda bleed together into one long midtempo boygirl harmonized sad song and then when you play one slightly uptempo number with a guitar solo people go nuts. Genius.
Now can we talk about the operner? ELK. (Caps theirs.) So best. Seriously. How great is it to go to a show and have some random local act open it up and blow you away. I’m not saying I’m gonna quit my job and follow them around the country, but I am saying that they’re even more proof that our scene is better than yours. You know I’m right.

blocking scenery, breaking minds

You ever have one of those moments where one of your buddies says something about a sign and you start singing that “Sign Sign Everywhere a Sign” song and you just kinda keep going with it and after like 2 minutes you realize you totally know every word to the entire song even though a) you haven’t heard it in 10 years and b) you never really liked Tesla even back when their 5 man acoustical jam was sweeping the nation like a denim-clad big-haired acoustical broom.
And then a minute later you break into ‘More Than Words’. Just because.
Yeah, me neither.
