David Brooks wrote a book about the new upper class in America and how they behave. He talks a lot about people who dress down but have nice cars and drink lattes. He also goes on about how status structures in modern society are based on where you went to school and where you work instead of what your family history is. I read the book a while back. It wasn't bad, but certainly didn't live up to the hype.

In any event, Brooks has an interesting article in a recent Atlantic Monthly. Worth a read.
