work has already started on that park next to the guthrie [strib] # (0)
i guess it's going to be called 'gold medal park', which is a neat name. amazing how fast this stuff can get built when some rich dude ponies up most [all?] of the money. here's hoping they get some greenspace closer to the downtown core.

i built a page at netvibes only to discover there's no stock quote widget [netvibes] # (0)
i'm going to try out this as my new homepage for a week or two and see how it goes. i'm not sure i'm loving it, but it's not bad. anyway, how funny is it that these web2.0 kids build all these worthless web2.0 widgets (random flickr viewer, blogmarks, etc) and don't bother to build a stock quote widget? there's a social commentary in there somewhere, go find it.
hennepin county board of commissioners votes 4-3 on stadium tax [mpr] # (0)
i believe that's the last vote, so now it's really, really going to happen. unless my latest favorite conspiracy theory turns out to be true: that nobody has actually figured out how to cram a stadium into that little parking lot. whoops.
someone made a 25 page guide to food at the minnesota state fair [visi] # (0)
there's also a food finder on the website. fair on.
farecast adds msp to its search feature [farecast] # (0)
i have no idea if it works, but at least now i can feel slightly informed as opposed to totally powerless. nostradoodle predicts the airlines are already working on ways to fool the engine.
nyt features eagan and northfield in the great cul-de-sac debate [nyt] # (0)
i'm a grid fan myself.
withering glance on svensational sven sundgaard [strib] # (1)
is it too early for me to say that wg is the best thing the strib has done all year? am i even allowed to say that? also check out the podcast, which is a longer, more conversational version of the column. i prefer the written [and edited] version, but that's just me.
a comparison between youtube and america's funniest home vids [slate] # (0)
"youtube is faster, more personalized, and less censored than tv, and there are fewer commercials. but it's also lonelier, less welcoming, and more pathetically voyeuristic." it probably makes me soft to agree with this column, but i do for the most part. "not long ago, we were hitting each other's groins at family picnics. now, we are groin punching alone". groin punching alone... that should so be youtube's tagline. i'm sure putnam wouldn't mind.
that lonelygirl15 vlog that's all the rage on youtube is maybe a hoax [lostremote] # (0)
i've watched a few of them as she gotten super popular. the videos come off almost too perfect, which is mostly why i'd be suspicious. not that i am, i'm just saying. i'm personally kina hoping it turns out to be real just so all the geniuses who are insisting it's fake will have to eat their bluetooth mice and admit they were clueless like the rest of us. nostradoodle still predicts it's fake, however, and his favorite theory is that it's a music label.
another story talking up w. broadway in north minneapolis [strib] # (0)
whenever i drive west broadway i make three observations. 1) this place has insane potential, but potential is only that, 2) this is exactly what that excelsior and grand thing in st louis park tried to do, and seriously, kudos for trying, but unfortunately it doesn't come off as 'real' as the 'real' thing does and 3) hey look, there's a white castle, time to get me a chicken with cheese.
the minnesota zoo is getting an otter and people will love it [strib] # (0)
the article details how high maintenance otters are. i had no idea. either way, otters are cute and i'll go check it out in 2009 or whenever it's supposed to get here.
slideshow of last night's tornado in cleveland, minn [wcco] # (0)
these pics were taken by the parents of a guy i play softball with. freaky.
lone doughnut update: actually in chapter 11, court ordered them out [lonedoughnut] # (4)
turns out the manager guy wasn't exactly feeding me the whole story when i asked him what was up, though i guess i wouldn't expect him to during a 30 second conversation. in any event, i went back to my office and fed myself whole delicious doughnuts. [earlier]
new season of 'survivor’ to divide teams along racial lines [nyt] # (0)
"both cbs and [producer mark] burnett acknowledged that the new format could be criticized. "i know it's going to be controversial," he said. "i'm not an idiot."" methinks that's an understatement. me also thinks i'll be glued to the screen this season just like every other one.
strib jadedly observes men at new hooters @ block e [strib] # (0)
for those of you keeping score, the new block e location is the third hooters in town and [i believe] this is the first time the strib found it necessary to send a pseudo-investigative reporter to document the pseudo-scandalous behavior of dudes dining there. i'm guessing the one at the moa has been open for more then a decade. nice scoop, strib. but hey, it'll probably generate a bunch of eyeballs and/or letters to the editor, and i got to ogle a pic of a hooters waitress in the newspaper, so it's not all bad.
the lone doughnut cafe is closing [citysearch] # (4)
they don't have a website and i can't find any mention of the closing online, but believe me, my friends, they're closing at the end of the month. i talked to the manager dude and he said the building just wants them out. if there was ever a time for grassroots rebellion, this would be it. those are hands down the best cake doughnuts in the twin cities and losing them will tear at the very fabric of our society.
lil dice talks with kris humphries outside the target center [iheartkg] # (0)
when i see wolves walking around downtown i usually just try and act cool. except for this one time when i passed joe smith in a crosswalk and i gave him a high 5. that was pretty neat, though in retrospect i wouldn't have done it had i known that he would later sign an illegal contract that would gut the team for a decade. whoops.
derusha's 'blog on a stick' is back for this year's fair [wcco] # (1)
it's cute in a sanitized media kind of way. i personally turn to myprontopup when i need some serious state fair blogging, but i'll probably make time to read them both. bring. on. the. fair.
in town for fundraiser, president stops at glaciers custard in wayzata for a snack [strib] # (0)
"bush ordered an unscheduled stop in wayzata on the way to the fundraiser. he ordered a vanilla custard at glaciers custard and coffee cafe on superior blvd. he told reporters he "strongly recommended" the treat." i, too, strongly recommend custard as an afternoon treat.
the pipress is doing little mini-stories on various intersections in st. paul [twincities] # (0)
neat idea and neat execution.
phil kessel ends gopher hockey career, signs with boston [eastlake] # (0)
moe argues that nobody will miss (or even talk about) kessel after he's gone because he never made a big enough impact. well let me go on record as saying i'll miss hearing all those badger doofs boo'ing every time he touched the puck, so that should count for something. [strib coverage]
badly drawn boy update: new tour, new album, new video [morecowbell] # (0)
no twin cities dates yet, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
10 of 35 marching bands in the 2006 state fair parades are from wisconsin [mnstatefair] # (0)
am i the only one surprised to hear this? doesn't wisconsin have their own state fair? do we get to march in it? i'm so ready for the fair.
why don't kids deliver newspapers anymore? [freakonomics] # (1)
i had an afternoon paper route when i was a kid, but up here in the cities our paper boy is always some dude in a van or something. i can't imagine some kid on a skateboard delivering papers at 5am. did that really used to happen? i'm pretty sure our little neighborhood paper is delivered by kids, so that's something.
'it's always sunny in philadelphia' is a total hoot [fx] # (0)
i've only seen a couple of episodes, but so far it's pretty dang funny. here's hoping it lasts for a while.
the dead's vault has physically moved into a warner brothers facility [marinij] # (0)
13000 audio and video recordings - along with pretty much everything else dead-related - is now under the management of rhino entertainment. i'm curious to see if the remaining members of the band stop being doofs now that they don't have the stress of 'the business' weighing them down. i'm also curious to see if people are going to pay for concert downloads when they've been available for free for so long. and finally, a dead themed cirque du soleil show in vegas? i'm. so. there.
5 bats killed to test for rabies, 950 girl scouts may have to get shots [nyt] # (0)
the shelter the campers slept in apparently had bats living in it, so maybe the kids got bitten and maybe they didn't and maybe they have rabies and maybe they don't. i wouldn't normally post something like this, but it dovetails with the meerkat hysteria from last week, so i figured it was worth it. here's hoping don shelby does a misty-eyed soliloquy on the death of the bats like he did for the meerkats. nostradoodle predicts he won't. nostradoodle also predicts this story won't generate 21 pages of comments like the meerkat one did. huh.
this new 'ok go' video on treadmills made me laugh [youtube] # (0)
it's hypnotic and awesome.
new strip club to open in warehouse district [strib] # (0)
i'm assuming this is exactly what sid hartman was talking about when he said the new stadium would attract businesses to the area. i never should have doubted you, sid.
new tests show landis had 'synthetic testosterone' in his system [nyt] # (3)
i still think he's guilty, but i want to believe he's not. maybe somebody spiked his drink or something. though from what i understand, you don't take synthetic testosterone that way, you take it by shooting it, so maybe they spiked his daily injection. it could happen.
the strib's vikings blog is off to a great start [strib] # (0)
credit where credit is due. is it wrong that it's only day 2 of camp and i'm already in mid-season vikings hysteria mode? in other news, i've been placed on the physically unable to program list.
twins officially moving to am1500 [strib] # (0)
they may have the twins, but they don't have dave and huna, so they still lack the quality needed to be a great station. call me!
summer hiatus begins now
Today begins my annual August hiatus. I figure if all of Europe can take the month off, why can't I? I'll continue to update my awesomely-branded suggestini links, so feel free to keep coming back in the hope that there'll something new. Or just subscribe to the feed and know when there's something new. Yay technology.
See you in September.
