reaction to kg deal
Here's my 5 bullet take on the KG deal. Buckle up.
- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- My math may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we have the entire Boston Celtics team from 2005 playing for us now. Plus Juwan "I Just Came Here To Play With KG, Seriously WTF" Howard. And a bunch of kids. And lo, a dark shadow fell across the land, for the Wolves were a 20-win team yet again. And probably yet again after that. And hopefully we'll get better after that. Because at some point we'll have a ton of experienced youth and a ton of money, and that's not always a bad thing. Nostradoodle clings to his prediction that the 2011-12 season will be awesome.
- Anybody else notice how the Strib's coverage of the developing story yesterday was total garbage? They basically went with AP reports and tips credited to ESPN and the Boston Globe. Their whole sports paradigm seems to have devolved to: "post a wire story, link to one of their blogs, and let the rube comment storm begin". All day I kept waiting for them to break my camel's back by begging for 'user submitted content relating to the KG story'. I just don't get it. They don't have anyone who can talk to someone inside the organization anymore? Youngblood on vacation or something? They were getting scooped by *everyone*. (Note: Vikes coverage still rawks.)
- Quick, check your calendar. Remember when the first BOS/MIN game is this season? Oh yeah, it's like one of the first exhibition games of the season. And it's in London. Curses.
- The real kicker here is that BOS is clearly a contender now. They wanted/needed to get better, so they took care of business and got better. And they'll win. And KG will be part of that. And people will say "why didn't we get Ray Allen?" and stuff like that, and I'll probably be right there with them, because honestly, looking back, you have to question if this organization ever *really* tried to get to a championship level. So my real question is: what size Celtics tank top would I look best in?
t-hud debut cd update : 78 copies sold in first week [mvn] # (2)
"the album sold four copies in indianapolis, one copy in phoenix, and no copies in huddy's hometown of carbondale, illinois." ouch. let's hope this doesn't hurt his game. or his contract buy-out talks. or his ponytails. [via]
some neat footage of the tunnels under st paul [kare11] # (0)
i'm sure there's a website full of awesome photos from amateur tunnel explorers, but i couldn't find much. also this: nice use of 'guesstimates' in the story.

how to help your yard and garden deal with the heat [mpr] # (0)
first suggestion: "water early in the day. start at 4:30 to 5 a.m." yeah, i'll get right on that... as soon as i finish my 4:00am run and my healthy bowl of grape nuts, that is. doodle.specific.yard.garden.update: my tomatoes seem to be loving the heat. the rest of the plants? eh, not so much. also this: i've implemented a mandatory can coozy policy for all bottled or canned beverages. i'm trying to brand it as 'code coozy', but it doesn't seem to be sticking.
"tour in tatters" after rasmussen fired by team [nyt] # (1)
we went back to poverty basic cable last spring, so i've been forced to follow along on the web, but even without the teevee coverage it's easity to see the long shadow being cast by rasmussen's firing and yesterday's vino news. yuck. in other news: what's up with the nyt popping up a search for anything you highlight in an article now? i'm going to have to clear that with my usability wife before i object too strongly, but it feels a little weird to me.
the focus groups are in: camp snoopy reborn as 'nickelodeon universe' [bizjournals] # (0)
now that's some grade-a genius branding.
simmons on the donaghy scandal [espn] # (0)
nutshell: short of a terrorist attack at halftime, this is the worst thing that could have possibly happened to the nba. ugh. [insert random 'a few good men' or 'top gun' reference here.]
the strib reviews the new 'red dawn' collectors edition dvd [strib] # (0)
i was just talking about this movie last week and now here it comes out on dvd. to be fair, though, i talk about red dawn pretty much every week, so it's not really *that* big of a coincidence.
lightweight physics breakdown of the new valleyfair rollercoaster 'renegade' [smm] # (0)
nutshell: potential into kinetic one time only, vs many times on many other coasters. also of note: "construction of 'renegade' was featured on discovery channel's "build it bigger" show earlier this month. the episode will be reaired monday, july 23, at 9 p.m. and again wednesday, july 24, at 1 a.m."

reset: mosedale wrote about local dog fighting last fall [citypages] # (0)
i've noticed a subtle increase in breathless local news coverage of this issue - obviously tied to the national story du jour - so i thought i'd throw up a link to this citypages story that broke the local scene down. you're welcome.
general mills to stop 'advertising' sugar cereals to kids [bizj] # (0)
"at a session co-sponsored by the federal trade commission and the cbbb in washington, d.c., wednesday, the company announced that it will no longer advertise foods containing more than 12 grams of sugar per serving to children under 12." kudos to them, but come on, we all know they'll still have smiling cartoon characters dancing around marshmallow waterfalls on the front of the box. reminder: advertise to kids != market to kids. reminder2: marshmallow waterfalls are awesome.
mn geology : sudbury debris found along gunflint [strib] # (1)
here's some background on the sudbury basin and how it was formed when a giant meteorite slammed into canada around 1.8b years ago. it was a really big deal. they had to cancel the hockey season and everything. yay rocks.
playing soccer in the brutal heat and humidity [wcco] # (0)
i had two games last weekend and have two more this weekend. at halftime everyone crowds under these pathetic little sun tents and sips water and whimpers. but it's still a ton of fun. the thing this story doesn't mention is how the field turf that's being used all over town - and that i lovelovelove, by the way - is full of these little black pieces of rubber which soak up the heat and make the field [literally] like 150 degrees. you can't even walk on it barefoot. toasty.
bean bag toss arcarde game? i'm. so. there. [targettosspro] # (0)
i rawked this last night at the company happy hour down at brother's. and by 'rawked' i mean 'i think i scored over 30 one time'. fun stuff. hope it comes out for the wii.
new mn state park on lake vermillion [kare11] # (0)
2500 acres down on the tower end of the lake. nice.
new twins stadium construction webcam [mlb] # (0)
if you look closely on the roof of butler square - the brick building in the foreground on the right - you can see the air conditioner chiller that was broken for weeks and weeks this spring, which caused many a climate issue down at the office. in other news, i hope they leave this thing up for games.
consumed on crocs [nyt] # (0)
interesting story, but it paints them as being a lot more 'controversial' than i've ever perceived them to be. i mean, let's be real: if 70% of kids you see out in public have them on (mine included), they're not some sort of underground fad, they're as mainstream as it gets. the real topic should by why they're so perfect. allow me: they can get wet, the kids can put them on and take them off by themselves, they're breathable, and they're colorful and fun. also this: the real 'consumed' story should have been about jibbitz. not sure why they focused on just the shoes.
timberwolves dunk team tryouts? i'm. so. there. [insidehoops] # (1)
"the auditions, open to applicants 18 years or older, will include a physical workout and a detailed explanation of how to perform dunks off of a trampoline." pinch me. [via]
doodlestalk : brian billick edition

Spotted: A grey bearded Brian Billick @ Gordy's High Hat in Cloquet, Minnesota on July 5th, 2007.
Scene: I was running out to the car to get something for the kid when I saw him walking in the side door of Gordy's. I grabbed my stuff, hustled back to where Libby and the kids were sitting, and started loudly gushing about how I had just seen former Vikings offensive coordinator and current Ravens head coach Brian Billick in the parking lot. Wow! Ten seconds later he walked out onto the porch with 3 large malts. And he carried them to the table next to us. Where his wife and daughter were waiting for him. And they enjoyed their malts as a family, most likely telling the story of the crazy-eyed shaggy doof at the next table acting a "little too excited" to have seen dad.

terri gruca's best places in minnesota to take kids [wcco] # (0)
oak hill splash pad, wild rumpus, edinborough... don't get me wrong, those places are all heavy in our rotation, but how can 90% of the 'best places in minnesota' be within 5 miles of morningside? ah, who cares, just load up the volvo and drive on over.
linda greenhouse breaks down supreme court oct06 [npr] [audio] # (0)
"pulitzer prize-winning new york times reporter linda greenhouse ... talks about the just-concluded court term, the landmark decisions handed down last week, and issues facing the court in its next session." she's no nina totenberg, but it's still a nice recap. man this was a big session for court fans. my favorite part was was when scalia updated his wikipedia page with his decisions before anyone knew he had decided anything.
