here comes the edina tear-down moratorium [strib]

the idea being that the current zoning system is broken and that a time-out is needed to sort thru what the new rules should be. seems reasonable, no? big surprise, jackass developers don't think so. but yeah, that's what makes them jackasses, so i guess you really can't blame them.

  1. Edina Resident thought:

I am a resident and and one of the largest home builders in Edina. The moratorium ordinance was resoundly defeated tonight 5-0, the motion failed and was never even voted on. In the past two weeks, the council had received a flood of phone calls, emails, and letters from citizens (not developers) stating their opposition to the moratorium. These people were seniors trying to sell their homes, families trying to build/remodel their homes in Edina, people trying to get their kids into Edina schools, real estate professionals, builders, and residents with no vested interest other than maintaining the property rights and redevelopment opportunities that have been working for Edina over the past 35 years. The small, activist group from Oaklawn failed in their efforts to jam a moratorium down Edina's throat due to their shallow and hostile tactics, which rung hollow with the silent majority of residents, as well as the council and mayor. As a builder and resident, I agree that we need to continually adjust our building codes to reflect the changing pressures on our housing stock. But I also believe we need to protect our seniors, families, and kids. Does my being concerned for our residents well-being while trying to improve our codes make me a jackass? I guess you have a different definition of that term than i do. I guess maybe its ok to talk like this and rant away in your little "blog world" without having any accountability for the truth or your impacts on others.

    AWESOME SOMEBODY READS MY BLOG

and totally any developer who squeezes a huge monster long and tall house onto a tiny morningside lot and ruins the established integrity and scale of the whole place is a jackass. if you wanna spin that as "protecting kids and families" then by all means, spin away. you could maybe even get your own "blog world" to rant away in. i'd totally read it. for real. it's a perspective that's missing here in the "blog world". where it's fair to anonymously generalize. see also: jackass.

i know developers in edina. i live next to them. i hope this is you, troy, you're a pretty cool guy. but come on, don't you even admit the tear down job you live in is too big? your master suite is bigger than our whole house was. and that's not an exaggeration. but yeah, the fireplace in the bathroom is awesome.

and me calling out jackass builders somehow impacts others? because 6 people read my blog? and you're making an accountability argument about what? the truth? this the "blog world" man! get a grip! post some pictures of your cat! can i have your facebook?

    best. comment. evar.

Boy, as a free marketeer it is sure hard to come down on the side of regulation. On the other hand, it is clear that we need some collective action to prevent "tragedy of the commons". People want to live in Edina for various reasons. Would they still want to live there if it was shoulder to shoulder mcmansions? Or is the first mover getting the gravy by building mcMansions in nice family neighborhoods. ?
