nice quick piece on the carbon issues with moving food around the globe [nyt]

the thread i find most curious - and i'm probably not alone - is the one about how it [maybe] takes less carbon to grow and ship things from new zeland (or whatever) than it does to grow and ship things domestically. it makes tons of sense, but you never think about it that way. i also found the 'carbon footprint next to the calories on the label' stuff interesting. (here's hoping swiss cake rolls have a tiny carbon footprint, because i feel guilty enough buying them already.) also: this piece dovetails nicely with the [better] op/ed'y 'why bother?' piece from last week's mag.
