new york city - fall 2003 - day 4

Today we got an early start so we could try and get Conan tickets for tonight's taping. We made it to Rockefeller Center by about 9:15 or so only to find out that Conan wasn't even taping this week. You can't really get upset, though, it's just a TV show. To cheer ourselves up we went over to the Today show area and watched the last 30 minutes or so of the show, including a segment where kids showed off their neato Halloween costumes. It was cool to see. Our original plan was to go on Monday morning, so we'll get to see it again then.

After lazing around Rockefeller Center for a while, we headed down for a nice walk through Greenwich Village. In the old days I guess the area was full of beats and socialists and cool dudes like Kerouac and Ginsberg and Dylan who hung out and drank coffee and wrote stuff and sang songs. Now, however, it just feels like a big Dinkytown with really expensive rent. The streets are cute and all, but I didn't get any 'vibe'. Maybe it's different at night, who knows.

We did stop at a restaurant I had heard of named Peanut Butter and Company. They serve tons of peanut butter sandwiches and other peanut butter stuff. I thought it sounded neat, and it was, if not stupid expensive. $5+ for a peanut butter and Nutella sandwich? What, are you kiddin' me with this? Libby and I split one, much to the chagrin of the counter girl, who apparently [beyond belief] sleeps fine at night after ripping people off all day.

Later in the afternoon, we took a nice long break in a little coffee shop. It was exactly what we needed. Unwind, read, drink some coffee, and just let your mind go 'duh' for a while. I think tomorrow may also include some relaxing. It is vacation after all, right?

Tonight, acting like real New Yorkers, we went out for dinner and movie. Dinner was at this place that supposedly has some of the best burgers in New York. On the menu they're called '7 ounce', but in reality they're more like 17. That's a lot of beef. I didn't finish mine.

Some highlights of the day:

  • Seeing people go crazy for that Anne lady from the Today show.

  • Stopping in a Belgian fry stand and getting some fries from a guy named Dennis from Canada. He couldn't have been nicer. Even though it's 60 blocks from our apartment, I thought about going down and eating at his restaurant tonight for dinner. Maybe later this week.
